Brass Band
Our Brass band publications are available in two versions - traditional or mixed clef.
In the traditional brass band sets the player parts (for brass instruments) are written in treble clef and transposed into Bb or Eb to suit each individual instrument. An exception is the Bass Trombone part which is written in bass clef.
The percussion parts use various clefs. Mallet percussion parts are treated as non-transposed C parts and are written in treble clef. Timpani parts are treated as non-transposed C parts and are written in bass clef. The remaining percussion parts are usually written using the neutral percussion clef.
In some parts of the world (e.g. Singapore and Malaysia) the brass bands often use a mixed clef approach. The smaller brass instruments (such as cornet and tenor horn) play from a transposed part written in treble clef. However, the larger brass instruments (such as trombone, euphonium, and tuba) play from a non-transposed part written in bass clef. This is especially true of primary school brass bands where the mixed clef approach permits a smooth transition into secondary school concert bands.
